Since I recently turned 16 and will be getting my license on Tuesday, I needed to start looking into getting insurance. I am not spoiled like many of my peers; therefore I am paying for it. Best quote I got was for $227 per month. Being a 16 year old male sucks.

MORE INFO: I will be hopping onto my parents account and listed as a secondary driver. I am not covering the car I am covering the ability for me to be driving (if that makes sense)

For what vehicle? Full coverage?

Is that via a plan on your parents account or on your own? Sometimes you can get on your parents overall plan, but pay your own line and get multi-line discounts from the whole policy.

Wow that's a lot. What car is that on???
For that much $ it may be worth buying a cheaper car in a lower bracket. The car will pay for itself pretty quick

Have you taken any drivers ed courses? Usually you can get better rates if you have. Also I have no idea what it is but maybe that snapshot thing that monitors safe driving could be helpful, although it might prevent some hoonage

If the car isn't titled/registered in your parents name, do that. It made my insurance 50% cheaper.

At the time, 7 year old Pontiac. 2 17 year old drivers. Lowest we got (With all the student discounts) was $200 a month. But seriously look into stuff like good grade discounts and things of that nature, every bit counts.

Aren't you sharing your car with your grandmother? See if you can put it under her name and list you as a driver.

It gets worse when you're 18, but better when you're 21. My rate was cut in half

Make sure you're not listed as the primary driver and that the vehicle is not listed as being primary transportation. There's money to be saved.

Don't do it per month, do it every 6 months. It also depends on what you are driving and what coverage.

My 96 bronco + my 85 bmw = 1200 a year, and I'm 22.

I am just looking to basically say that I am insured and will be driving a car every once in a while. This isn't even for the vehicle; that is already being paid for by my grandma

Are you going to the "Discount" places online? I was getting quoted in the $150-170 range online and I went to Erie, got a great agent (that I can talk to!), and it costs a touch under $100.

If you go in person, the agent is normally a little more sympathetic and will bend the rules and get you a little better rate.

As someone else pointed out, if you can, simply jump on to your parents' policy. If you can't, this is one of those times when it pays to go out and do some legwork. Go find your nearest Geico, Progressive, State Farm, and AAA offices. Go talk to an agent at each of them, get some paper quotes, and cross shop them. it's a chunk of work up front, but there's a chance that it may help you better understand what you need and save you some money.

The highly sought after Porter Cab...for their tail lights that fit in the Garage Vary Miata finish panel.

That seems absurd for insurance, although paying on your own seems to indicate you have your own car. Is that for liability only? If not...get a beater for liability only coverage.

Thats the worst part: this is me hopping on their plan... I would be listed as another driver (not primary) that we occasionally be driving

To be fair, that sounds about right. I paid about $280/month for a long, long time under the same set of circumstances. It wasn't until I was 26 with a clean record that my premiums dropped, though they did drop dramatically. I now pay about $80/month.

Get used to a part-time job, because it's going to be a shitty ten years or so for insurance.

Ah, the joys of being 16. Someone once said that youth was wasted on the young, and someone else once said that the energy of the young was to get through all the bullshit of that time in your life. Fuck both of those people. Not because they were wrong, but rather because they were right.

Enjoy it while you can, because it will only get worse. At some point, you'll also have to factor in a car payment, gas, maintenance, and coverage on the car itself.

As for a job... I remember that being one of the most frustrating things in the world. Everyone in society wanted me to pay for everything myself so that I could learn responsibility and the value of things, but no one wanted to hire me because I was a 16-year-old punk with no experience.

It sucks, but you'll find a way. Keep at it, and remember, no matter what you may think right now, you're from alone.

As a former P&C insurance agent, I have some tips.

First, take a defensive driving course. Most of the time community colleges will offer them. It'll cost a few hundred bucks but will pay for itself within one policy term. You could see a discount of 25%

Second, make sure you have good grades. Most insurance companies have a good student discount that can go up to another 25% depending on the company and your grades. The company I used to work for had a 12.5% discount for a GPA of 3.0-3.5 and 25% for 3.51-4.0.

Make sure the cars have all the vehicle feature discounts available as well. More airbags means more discounts on uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and medical payments (the stuff that pays for the driver if he/she's at fault in an accident, before health insurance).

Also, if you're a third driver on a 2-vehicle policy, you probably have to be listed as a rated driver on the highest-premium vehicle. It's just the way insurance companies work. Because you represent a high risk, they're going to take as much premium as possible. Depending on the company, it may actually go down if you add a third vehicle with ABS/ESC, without comp/collision (full coverage) and list yourself as an occasional driver on it.

As you get more experience driving, rates will go down. After year three, they go down significantly, then again at year 9. They bottom out in your thirties and stay about the same until you reach retirement age.

This is the way it should be done until a little after you are 20 or so. You'll save a bit of money that way. The prices won't drop down until you are around 23~25. There should be plenty of discounts, the most common of which are usually stuff relating to academics where if you have above a 3.0 they cut like $500 or something.
